Irén Hangen Vázquez is a rising fourth-year undergraduate studying with Dr. Melissa Kraut at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she is pursuing a BMus in cello performance and music theory, as well as a minor in mathematics through Case Western Reserve University. She has participated in summer festivals and programs including Le Domaine Forget de Charlevoix, Kinhaven Young Artists Seminar, Sphinx Performance Academy, Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and Aria Summer Academy. She will also attend Orford Music Academy and the Kinhaven Adult Chamber Music Workshop as a fellow this summer. Irén has performed in masterclasses for esteemed artists such as Paul Katz, Wei Yu, and Richard Weiss, among others. Irén has received several awards including the Agnew Bach Prize at the 25th Annual Cleveland Cello Society Scholarship Competition in April of 2023, for which she played in the Society's Winners' Recital in January of 2024, as well as a string scholarship at the Vermont All States Festival in 2021. She is also a prizewinner of the 30th Annual Darius Milhaud Performance Prize, which was held in April of 2024. Irén is a passionate chamber musician and has been a member of the Advanced Piano Trio Program at the Cleveland Institute of Music under the tutelage of cellist Sharon Robinson since January of 2024. Irén is dedicated to programming and performing works by underrepresented composers and hopes to continue this work in her future career. When not playing the cello, she enjoys reading, playing with her cat, and spending time outside with her parents in beautiful Danby, Vermont!
