🎵 Saturday, July 20th, 10:00am – 3:00pm at the Newbury Center Town House, 4504 Scotch Hollow Rd., Newbury). Experienced singers, novices, listeners, history buffs, music lovers, and curiosity seekers are invited to come to the all-day singing and celebrate the music of early Vermont. Come for the day or just stop by to sing or listen as people from all over the Northeast gather to raise their voices. Tunebooks will be provided. Share a potluck dinner at noon and become part of a vital musical community celebrating the shape note tradition whose roots stretch back over 200 years. FREE for everyone.

🎵 Here's a bit of background about Jeremiah Ingalls and the musical tradition he helped create.

Jeremiah Ingalls served as choirmaster of Newbury's First Congregational Church from 1791–1805. He composed in the "fasola" singing style that originated in late 18th century New England. In 1805, Ingalls compiled his own tunebook, Christian Harmony, including in it songs like "Northfield," "Danville," and "Barnet," in honor of nearby towns.

The Singing will be held in the historic Newbury Center Town House, a building virtually untouched since its construction in 1839. The Town House's wood and plaster interior creates some of the best acoustics anywhere in Vermont. Combined with the robust fasola singing style, the room promises to ring out with music the way Ingalls intended.

Given the vigorous nature of Sacred Harp Singing, it is requested that all participants and visitors have a negative Covid test the day of the Singing.
