Reading Frederick Douglass

Jul 5, 2024, 1 to 2 PM

Reading Frederick Douglass at Rokeby Museum

On July 5th, 1852 Frederick Douglass delivered his groundbreaking speech, "What to the slave is the 4th of July." It was a powerful condemnation of American hypocrisy – the land of the "free." His words ring true more than 170 years later, and the speech is widely considered to be his best.

Join us on Friday, July 5th at 1:00pm, and add your voice to the inspiring community reading of Douglass's speech. Grammy Award-winning singer Rev. Dr. François Clemmons will open the program. The event is free.

Come early or stay late and tour the Museum (Admission required), including the newly installed main exhibit Seeking Freedom. House tours at 11:00 and 2:00.
