Scarecrow Contest at Farmers Market

Past event
Oct 1, 2024, 3 to 6 PM

"A scarecrow is a decoy or mannequin that is often in the shape of a human. Humanoid scarecrows are usually dressed in old clothes and placed in open fields to discourage birds from disturbing and feeding on recently cast seed and growing crops."

Ooops, there it is. As you look for a summer activity… Think of creating a scarecrow that you bring to the penultimate (next to last) farmers market on the Common on Oct. 1. You know, the market that will have Union Brook Farm pressing your cider apples for free. We are too cool for effigies and political statements, but prizes will awarded for the best!
Nature Inspired: think corn stalk appendages, pumpkin heads, hay-stuffed bib overalls, etc.
Cartoon or Movie Characters: Manga, Marvel, DC, Pixar — bring your heroes to life! Did someone say Pigman?!!!
Mechanical: robots, Transformers, and yes, if you think you can create an animatronic scarecrow that will not disturb our neighbors on the Common! Your energy source must be solar, wind, or pedal-powered.
Wild Card: Anything you can imagine, as long as it's scary, funny, clever or cute, but not religious, political, violent, or pornographic.

Kiddos, here is the chance to create your interpretation of what a scarecrow means. Parents, this is a chance to keep your kiddos busy over the summer. Young adults, you have asked for something to do in Northfield. Show us what you got, what you really, really got. Scarecrows will remain on the Common until judged by market patrons and vendors at the last Farmers Market of the season on Oct. 8. The winning scarecrow will adorn the Common through All Hallows Eve. So get going on your creation! Questions? Call Charlie or Cassie at 485-8586.
