Tonight's City Council Meeting Preview

Past event
Jun 24, 2024, 6:30 PM

The City Council's next meeting is tonight, Monday, June 24th, at 6:30 pm in Contois Auditorium. Public Forum begins at 6:45 pm.

As always, you are welcome to attend in person or virtually on zoom: https://zoom.us/j/98653723824 . If you'd like to speak during Public Forum, be sure to sign up at least an hour in advance. Here is the link to sign up: https://www.burlingtonvt.gov/citycouncil/publicforum

Here are the key items on the agenda:

→ PATRICK LEAHY BTV AIRPORT IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
The Leahy BTV Airport needs approval from the Council to apply for a federal grant and approve contracts for important airport renovations. This will significantly upgrade the north terminal and allow for larger planes, additional routes, and overall more comfortable travel experiences for folks flying from Patrick Leahy BTV.

→ FY 2025 BUDGET
In this meeting, we will be voting on the FY 25 budget, which follows our most recent budget work session and Council meeting with the Mayor. In negotiations leading up to the budget vote, the Democratic Caucus asked for increases in public safety funds and housing administration staffing. I'm happy to confirm that those items have been added to the budget.

→ PROPERTY TAXES FOR FY 25
We will vote on the annual assessment of the Property Grand List of the city for the upcoming Fiscal Year 2025. These are the taxes that fund the city's budget.

→ GROSS RECEIPTS TAX
This ordinance change will increase existing City of Burlington Hotel and Motel Tax from 2% to 4%, and increase the restaurant, amusement, and admissions tax from 2% to 2.5%. These changes are necessary to fund the budget and maintain services for all Burlington residents.

Important note on the budget: The items above represent approximately 30% of the property tax burden for Burlington residents. The State of Vermont, in collaboration with the Burlington School Board, has the authority to set the remaining 70% of property tax rates. The bulk of our property taxes in Burlington are driven by school budgetary needs.

As always, feedback and questions are welcome.

In partnership,

Becca Brown McKnight
Ward 6 City Councilor
