Are you itching to fish junk out of the rivers? We are, too! Friends of the Winooski River has organized the annual river cleanup in Montpelier for the past 25 years, and after we were unable to get into the river last year due to persistent high water, we're so eager to get the trash out this year!
The cleanup will be September 7, the first Saturday after Labor Day.
If you're interested in helping out, please drop us a line at info@winooskiriver.org. We need at least one site captain for each access point, folks to lend their boats and folks to round up and distribute the loaned boats to the access points, as well as volunteers to get right into the river and pull the junk out.
One of our dedicated volunteers in the RK Miles/Barr Hill stretch, Jed Hock, shared some of the reasons he loves to be part of this event:
Each fall, after Labor Day weekend, I know I can always look forward to River Clean-Up Day. One thing I think people would never expect–the event is actually very fun. The camaraderie of spending 20 minutes on a 25-foot steel I-beam isn't something to be overlooked. Or the satisfaction of finally freeing that submerged, mud-filled tire. This year, after several years of wishing to be big enough, my kids were even able to participate, making this become an annual family event. Seeing their enjoyment of it all made me feel proud. Here in Montpelier, we all see the Winooski and North Branch; they line our downtown and neighborhoods. In the Fall, if you see us down in the river, come on down, the water is warm-ish.
