See Old Growth Up Close
Join us on a tour of old forests with Women and Our Woods VT and other women who share your interest in Vermont's woods. The tour will be led by Ecologist Liz Thompson.
While most of Vermont had been cleared by settlers by the 1800s, there are a few precious patches of old forest left. We will visit two of these sites where we will get a glimpse into what the ancient woodlands were like. We'll see lots of downed wood, big trees, mosses and lichens, trees of multiple ages, and spongy forest soils. We will end the tour at a property where a younger forest is being managed to enhance old forest characteristics and learn how we can restore some of the characteristics that define old forests to our much younger forests of today.
We'll be walking on uneven ground, off-trail, with some steep sections, for up to 6 miles total.
We will meet in Ripton at 9am and walk to the first site before getting into a bus to travel to the next sites. The bus will have a restroom. We will return by 4pm. Lunch will be provided.
