Dear Neighbors,
The City Council's next meeting is on Monday, June 10, starting at 6pm. Public forum will take place at 6:15pm. As always, you are welcome to attend in-person at City Hall or virtually via Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/99350230423.
Please know that if you want to participate in public forum virtually, you need to sign up at least one hour in advance using the following link: https://www.burlingtonvt.gov/citycouncil/publicforum. If you are speaking in-person, you do not need to sign-up in advance.
There are a number of agenda items I'd like to bring to your attention:
--> CHAMPLAIN PARKWAY – currently, the construction of the Champlain Parkway is only approved from Home Avenue up to Kilburn Street, which is where construction has been taking place. The City Council still needs to approve Phase 2 of construction, which includes completion of the connector to I-189 and improvements to Pine Street up to the intersection with Main Street. The Department of Public Works will be presenting to the City Council on Phase 2, including proposals on how to mitigate and slow traffic in the Maple/King neighborhood and other side streets. A vote on whether to approve Phase 2 will occur later this summer.
--> BANK/CHERRY STREETS – as downtown construction of CityPlace continues, we are getting closer to a point where we will be able to reconnect the downtown street grid. DPW will also be presenting on these plans, which should be voted on at the City Council's June 24 meeting.
--> BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS – the City Council will be making a number of annual appointments to the City's volunteer boards and commissions. Thanks are owed to all who applied to serve. If you're interested in future opportunities, please stay informed here: https://www.burlingtonvt.gov/CityCouncil/Boards-Commissions-Committees.
--> ENCAMPMENT POLICY – as federal and State funding for housing supports is unfortunately cut back, Burlington is bracing for the consequences. The Mayor has asked for time with the City Council to present on how she intends on addressing encampments and a work session on this issue will follow the Mayor's presentation.
--> FY25 BUDGET – the Mayor has also asked for time with the City Council to present the full FY25 municipal budget. Another work session will follow this presentation and a vote on the budget will take place on June 24.
As always, I welcome your feedback on these items or any other issues facing our City.
Thank you and best regards,
Ben Traverse
