The Safety Team's Empowerment Self Defense Workshop (Level 1) teaches simple, powerful, and effective personal protection strategies that are easy to understand and remember. Participants learn how to recognize predatory behavior before it becomes a threat, diffuse it verbally, if possible, and apply effective physical self defense techniques, if necessary. By adhering to a 5:1 student-to-instructor ratio, the trauma-sensitive instruction also focuses on boundary setting, affirmative consent, and relevant sexual assault information. The overarching goal is to help women discover their collective voice, address victim-blaming by redirecting the responsibility for all assaults on to the perpetrators, improve women's sense of freedom, power, and control, and, as a result, reduce the likelihood of sexual assault and violence.
All fitness levels welcome! No prior experience required! Open to cis/trans women and girls 12 and up. Twelve-to-thirteen-year olds need to be accompanied by their mother or female legal guardian. Fourteen-to-eighteen-year olds need a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian. All classes are LGBTQ+ friendly and trauma responsive. The Safety Team is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization (see http://thesafetyteam.org).
Fee: $65, but mothers and daughters who are Franklin County residents pay half the price and those who identify as BIPOC and LGBTQ+ are free. To register, please visit https://thesafetyteam.org/empowerment-self-defense-training/.
