Hi Neighbors,
We welcome all to Ward 1's next NPA meeting on June 12 at the Friends Meeting House at 173 North Prospect St, 6:30-9PM. The Neighborhood Planning Assembly is our community's opportunity to spend time with our city officials and talk about the things that matter to us. This month we are starting a little early, 6:30, to make sure we don't go too late!
On the agenda, let's start at the end: we are devoting the last hour of the meeting to a discussion with Representative Troy Headrick and Senator Martine Gulick, who will tell us about this past (and present) legislative session. We are scheduling plenty of time so there will be opportunity for conversation.
Before the Montpelier update, Shannon Trammell, Executive Manager of the Burlington Police Department, will come to hear how we might be interested in getting to know the police force better. She writes, "I am reaching out to start a discussion on how BPD can engage with your neighborhood. While our Public Information and Engagement Coordinator, Sarah Timm, has been attending meetings, I am looking for input on if there is interest for BPD and its officers, social workers and others within the Department, to host some sort of community event in your ward, in a manner that your neighborhood would welcome and engage with us in sometime this summer. I don't know exactly what that looks like; if that is creemee with a cop, an ice cream truck event, a neighborhood BBQ, or scavenger hunt? Or something else? We would like to earn our trust back with those that feel we have lost it and connect with the community in different ways, and am wondering if there is interest in something like this as a first step."
So to be clear, this agenda item is not about solving Burlington's Public/Community Safety issues. It is about how we might build relationships between residents and police department staff. Come with ideas!
Before Shannon, our City Councilors, Tim and Carter, and East District School Commissioner Gary have slots to discuss what is going on, so bring your questions and concerns to share with them.
It all begins at 6:30 with food made with love by Sam Ayotte and introductions and announcements, followed by Speakout, an opportunity to talk about anything you want to talk about!
We look forward to seeing you in person next Wednesday, but if you can't appear in person you can join us by Zoom:
