FEATURED ARTIST OPEN HOUSE. Plan to attend our next Open House on Sunday, September 8, from 1 to 4 p.m. featuring painters Jim Foote and Melissa Haberman along with paper sculpture magician Becky Wright, who will display, present, and discuss their work at AIR, and we’ll all ask questions and applaud as appropriate! Refreshments, good conversation, the monthly raffle, and profound insights into the creative process complete the afternoon’s agenda. Do join us!
Jim Foote: “My latest painting is a return to a favorite theme, flowers, lace and my blue vase. Painting from life in my studio is a challenge, getting the light and flowers right before they change. The Sunflowers in it connect to my earliest memories of wanting to be a painter, the 1956 van Gogh movie Lust for Life. I can see why van Gogh painted so many of them.”
Melissa Haberman: "At the beginning of spring I am always anxious to get into the garden. This past spring I was part of a new endeavor in my community. I along with 11 other families started a community garden in the town of Montgomery. I spent many hours planting and dreaming, waiting for the fruits of our labors throughout the spring and summer to sprout. These 4 new pieces are the result of all that loving work."
Becky Wright: “I have been creating whimsical paper mache sculptures for a few years. It is a fun medium to work in because anything is possible! I start with wire, brown paper and masking tape and sculpt the paper into my vision. Sometimes the vision changes as I progress. I cover the sculpture with 3 layers of paper mache, then I’m ready to paint. I love to paint in bright colors and designs similar to the Oaxacan designs of Mexico. I also enjoy sewing scarves from patches of rayon cloth that I pick up from a recycling store. Creating art has been a part of my life since I was very young. I enjoy dabbling in a variety of mediums and am always willing to try something new. I have been teaching art in the school setting for 18 years and am currently teaching at Bakersfield Elementary School.”
