Exploring the Efficacy and Intricacies of Russia Sanctions: A Talk with Christine Abely

It has been over two years since Russia invaded Ukraine. Never before had a nation of Russia's size been subject to so many sanctions, from so many countries, so quickly, with so little seeming result. The Windham World Affairs Council (WWAC) will consider why sanctions have achieved neither their supporters' wildest dreams nor their greatest fears by hosting a talk with Christine Abely, author of The Russia Sanctions: The Economic Response to Russia's Invasion of Ukraine (Cambridge University Press 2023) and Assistant Professor of Law at New England Law in Boston on Thursday, June 6th, at 6:30 pm at 118 Elliot, 118 Elliot Street, Brattleboro, Vermont.

This event is free to the public but a $10 donation is suggested, registration is encouraged at https://russiasanctions.eventbrite.com. A Zoom link is also available upon registering. Alternatively, contact us at windhamworldaffairscouncil@gmail.com on the day of the talk to be sent a link.

Professor Abely spotlights why sanctions reveal many of the central networks, conflicts, and trends that define our world today and will explore financial sanctions, oil and gas, oligarchs, food insecurity, and enforcement. She will help us understand how sanctions' very complexity reflects both the nature of globalization and the gaps in the international rule of law.

Christine Abely is an Assistant Professor teaching Contracts & International Business Transactions at New England Law. Her op-eds have appeared in The L.A. Times, The Hill, and other outlets. She has been quoted in The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and MarketWatch, among other outlets, and she has appeared on CBS 880, Boston Public Radio, Texas Public Radio, Bloomberg Businessweek, and elsewhere.
