Please join us next Monday, October 27th at 3pm in Montpelier on the statehouse lawn for #TimesUpRiseUp, a public appeal to stop the fracked gas pipeline planned for Addison County and underneath Lake Champlain. There will be a rally, and also civil disobedience for those who choose to participate.
Many of us feel that the emergency status of the climate requires that we stop all fossil fuel projects and quickly switch to renewables and greater efficiency. Vermont banned fracking, so we shouldn't be importing fracked fuel from elsewhere--in this case probably from Alberta, Canada.
It is clear to many of us, including most people who live along the proposed route, that Vermonters in Addison County would do much better in reducing their energy costs by weatherizing and installing new technologies like heat pumps, solar water heaters, wood pellet stoves, etc., at prices comparable to gas heat. Who would benefit from the pipeline? Cabot Cheese, Middlebury College, and especially International Paper in Ticonderoga, NY. So current VT Gas customers would have to pay for a project that primarily benefits corporations and large institutions - no thanks! I hope folks will come and join pipeline critics from across the state for this important gathering. More info. is at http://350vt.nationbuilder.com/times_up_rise_up.
