Kenyan Quaker, Getry Agizah, will speak about her experiences of working for peace in the aftermath of the violent Kenyan elections in 2007-2008. Getry and others stepped up to quell the violence even though they were often learning as they engaged with hostile parties.
Getry ran groups in a prison and helped make it safe for some folks displaced by the violence to return home. She and others experienced the power of listening to hostile people and trauma victims. Then, in the next general election, Getry and others implemented what they learned in 2007-08 and the election was much calmer.
Getry's experience and guidance may prove valuable to us, no matter what our political persuasion, as we prepare for what may be a time of fraught emotions and great tensions before, during, and after our upcoming presidential election.
Getry is being hosted by Bennington Friends (Quaker) Meeting and her talk will follow a potluck supper on Tuesday, May 28, at the home of Alison Levie and Michael Wajda, 201 Weeks Street, Bennington. The potluck will begin at 6:00 p.m. and Getry's talk will begin around 7:00 p.m. Please bring a dish to share, and RSVP to Michael Wajda mfwajda@gmail.com (484) 639-3356.
