Where is Away? Trash, Recycling, and Compost in VT

Past event
May 25, 2024, 10 to 11 AM

This weekend at the Marlboro Community Center, WSWMD's outreach coordinator, Alex Lacy, will be presenting a workshop/discussion about where our unwanted, unusable items go when they go away.

Whether your trash, recycling, and food scraps get picked up by a hauler, are transported by you to the WSWMD transfer station, or what have you - each category has a story. In SE VT, our recyclables go to the Rutland Material Recovery Facility, our trash gets trucked to VT's last landfill, and our food scraps are either composted at WSWMD's compost facility or are used for Anaerobic Digestion. Each of these destinations have their own way of dealing with this massive amount of material and certain considerations should be made by all of us before we throw away what's still useable, before we put something that is not supposed to be recycled in the recycling, and when we decide what will be composted or not.

Alex hopes to bust some myths, teach what she knows from working with the Waste District for 3 years, and learn from you as well about what you know and what you would like to know more about. The world of waste is ever-changing. Come to the Marlboro Community Center on Saturday, May 25th at 10 am for a free presentation and let's learn together.
