The City of Winooski will host a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of the Main Street Revitalization project on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, 10 AM at the Winooski VFW Post 1767 located at the intersection of Main Street and Maple Street (6 Maple Street). Federal, State, and local officials, as well as Winooski community leaders, business owners, and residents are invited to join us for this momentous occasion. Statements will be followed by a brief opportunity for press questions and a group photo.
The Main Street Revitalization project is a complete rebuild of about 0.8 miles of US Route 2 & 7 between New England Central Railroad and the Colchester town line. The project aims to improve safety, accessibility, and mobility for all modes of transportation, upgrading utilities, fixing the streets and sidewalks, and maintaining an important regional connection. Driven by community feedback and the City's Strategic Vision and Master Plan, this voter-approved infrastructure investment has finally begun since planning and public process started in 2017. Critical investment from federal, state, and local entities have brought this project to life and support Winooski's ambition to thrive as "Vermont's Opportunity City." "Winooski's downtown redevelopment spurred millions of dollars of private investment and growth, creating new housing and businesses while adding much-needed vibrancy to our city. The Main Street Revitalization project extends this vibrancy and modernization to one of our most significant gateway corridors. In addition to growth in our grand list and expanding the tax base, I can't wait to see the walking and biking improvements, sidewalk repairs, new street trees, the replacement of our aging water infrastructure, and the overall boost to our local economy." – Mayor Kristine Lott
"This project is proof that an engaged community can accomplish amazing results. I am thankful for the tremendous amount of service provided by current and former City Council members, staff, representatives, and project partners. I am especially proud of the public participation that shaped this investment in Winooski's resilience. With that in mind, I encourage everyone to continue supporting the businesses on Main Street while they patiently work through a disruptive construction schedule. We are open for business and your patronage is crucial!" – Elaine Wang, City Manager
The construction of the Winooski Main Street Revitalization project is anticipated to conclude in late 2025 or early 2026. Most construction activities are anticipated to take place Monday through Friday during the daytime hours. There will be some instances of night and weekend work when necessary. Construction will typically restrict Main Street to northbound traffic only with southbound traffic detoured to Weaver Street, and there will be instances of short temporary road closures on side streets.
