The Marshfield Conservation Commission is seeking a few volunteers for a project at Martin Bridge Park removing invasive Japanese Knotweed. There are a handful of small established patches of knotweed along the Winooski River in the park, and we are working on a plan to eradicate (or at least contain) these populations. However, last year's flooding created a new problem. Flood waters can break off pieces of established knotweed plants and spead the pieces to new locations. Each piece can take root and grow a new plant, which may eventually establish a new patch of knotweed.
We'd like to gather a small group of volunteers (4-6 people) to walk up and down the banks of the Winooski in the park and remove all the newly growing baby knotweed plants before they can become established. Next Thursday, May 16th, the Friends of the Winooski will be working with a crew from the Intervale to plant 400 trees and shrubs at Martin Bridge, so we'd like to do the knotweed removal on the same day.
