Jumping Worms: How to Prevent Them and What to Do if You've Got Them
Jumping worms are an invasive earthworm species that threaten Vermont's native species and Vermonters' garden health. Their name comes from their tendency to thrash violently when disturbed. Jumping worms live on the soil-surface, usually just under leaf litter, and rapidly consume organic matter. Their castings resemble coffee grounds and can be easily washed away by rain or result in nutrient loss through leaching. They are being found in Windsor forests and gardens and spread easily. UVM Extension Master Gardener Cindy Heath will discuss jumping worms: how to prevent getting them, what to do if you already have them, and current research into how to combat their impact on our environment.
