Have you ever wondered how to repair beloved clothes that are showing signs of wear?
Learn how to mend your clothes in an empowering beginner-friendly workshop on May 11th. The focus will be on repairing woven cloth garments and household items (think denim, button down shirts, quilts, etc.) using simple tools and hand sewing techniques. Come breathe new life into your old clothing!
Students will learn the basics of mending - how to use basic sewing tools, thread and fabric selection, and how to pin a patch and stitch it in place. Students will also be discussing the "why" of mending - the life cycle of clothing, the destructive effects of fast fashion, and ways that mending is beneficial to the environment and our own sense of agency.
Students are encouraged to bring 1-3 projects to work on, and will leave with the skills necessary to tackle a wide variety of mending opportunities. All tools and materials will be provided (scissors, pins and needles, thread and fabric). Students are also welcome to bring their own tools and supplies, and mending kits will be available for purchase from the instructor for $30 (optional).
This workshop is hosted by Meg Reinhold, who seeks to interrupt the disposable cycle of consumerism, seeing beauty and value in the history of wear and repair. She is a local textile artist and muralist who has just put up her beautiful work on Rabble's Brick Wall. Come buy or just check out her pieces in our store!
