Green Up Day is Saturday, May 4.
BONUS: A Volunteer Fair
So, here's the scoop on the day:
GREEN UP DAY. In case you're new to town and/or Vermont, Green Up Day has been an iconic Vermont happening since the 70s. On the first Saturday in May, community members in towns all across the state work together to pick up roadside trash. Here in Lincoln, Green Up bags will be available for you to pick up starting April 27 at the General Store, library, and town office, so you can get a head start on roadside trash cleanup. Every bag you fill makes Lincoln more beautiful AND earns you a raffle ticket to put toward some great gift cards from local businesses.
There will be a dumpster at the Lincoln fire station on Green-up Day, from 7:00-5:00 for Green Up garbage. The Lincoln Conservation Commission will have a table there as well, from 8-noon, with Green Up bags, gloves, and raffle tickets. You'll receive one raffle ticket for each Green Up bag you drop off at the fire station during those morning hours, which you can enter into gift card drawings. The drawings will happen at noon, so get an early start on trash pickup so you have your bags and other trash back to the fire station before noon. We'll have a special prize for the person or family that brings the most roadside trash.
The dumpster is for Green Up roadside garbage only. Tires must obviously be ones that were found in ditches. Green up bags only; no household trash bags. Collect clean, returnable cans and bottles in a separate green up bag. They will count toward your bag total.
If you won't be in town on Saturday, you can do your trash pickup early and arrange with a neighbor to bring it to the fire station for you on Saturday. PLEASE DO NOT leave your full bags by the side of the road--there isn't a pick-up service. But if you happen to see a bag by the roadside on Saturday morning, please bring it to the firehouse--you'll get a raffle ticket for it!
VOLUNTEER FAIR: New this year, created and coordinated by the Lincoln Library board, there will be a volunteer fair from 10am-12pm at the fire station, where different community organizations will have tables with information about who they are, what they do, and how to get involved. When you drop off your trash, you can stop by the tables, nibble on baked goods, and learn about some of the many ways to volunteer in Lincoln.
If you're part of a volunteer organization in Lincoln and would like to have a table at the Volunteer Fair, contact Sally Baldwin at 802-233-0243. It'll be a great way to showcase what your group is up to and potentially recruit new volunteers.
Come one, come all!
Some trash pick-up suggestions:
• Wear long pants and boots and check for ticks when you're done.
• If you see a needle or sharp object, find an adult to deal with it. Put it in a thick plastic container, and duct tape the lid on, then put it into trash.
• Assume drivers aren't paying attention. Always work facing oncoming traffic. Wear bright clothing.
• Collect clean returnables/recyclables in a separate bag. Consider donating them to the Lincoln Historical Society (trailer outside the town office).
• Wear gloves or use a trash picker-upper
