" The Great Francis: The Story of Abenaki Chief Francois Annance (1759-1826)"
War chief and captain of his nation, agent, guide, interpreter, school master, petitioner, hunter and cantor. Francois was once known as "the Great Francis". His multifaceted life spanned the pivotal period from the Conquest of New France all the way to the first formal inquiry into Aboriginal conditions in Upper and Lower Canada by the British colonial government. In that time of grave uncertainty for the First Nations, there were many challenges confronting the Abenakis of he Mission of St. Francis, now better known as Odanak.
