Lake Bomoseen Environmental Alliance's first annual Spring Educational Meeting will be held Sat. May 4th from 9 am to 3 pm, & you are invited! Join us in the Stafford Academic Center of VSU Castleton for all or part of the day. The event is free, accessible, & open to the public.
From 9:00-10:15, meet the board & hear a brief overview of the organization, updates on lake monitoring & water quality, news from our allied organizations, & a bit about lake ecology.
Our keynote speaker, Dr. Andy Vermilyea, PhD Geochemistry, will give a presentation from 10:30-11:30. He will explore what we mean by 'water quality', how we assess it, & some of the emerging concerns in our local water bodies. We'll focus more specifically on phosphorus & the sequence of events that can lead to algal blooms.
Professor Vermilyea studied reactions driven by sunlight in freshwater bodies & how they influence nutrient availability. He teaches & conducts environmental chemistry research with students at VSU Castleton on nutrient export from local VT landscapes & impacts on our lakes. Q & A will follow.
We'll break from noon to 1:00. Please bring a brown bag lunch or to visit a local eatery.
At 1:00 Hilary Solomon, Manager of the Poultney Mettowee Natural Resources Conservation District, will discuss PMNRCD's focus & how the organization can help with management best practices (e.g., stormwater runoff mitigation and native plant buffers).
Louis Daversa, VT State Game Warden stationed in Rutland, will join us with several colleagues at about 1:45 to discuss boating safety & regulations, problems he has encountered on the lake, & the new wake boat rules. We'll wrap up the day with more Q & A. s
