Up for Discussion: Reimagining Stories

Past event
May 7, 2024, 5:30 to 7 PM

Up for Discsussion is a quarterly(ish) series at Town Hall Theater, sponsored by Vermont Book Shop and Vermont Humanities. Free to attend, it is a 90-minute format that features a short, small panel conversation between experts followed by facilitated roundtable discussion amongst pre-registered participants in a convivial setting (read: there's a cash bar and snacks!). We launched in March with a full house and lively discourse on awe and its role in our lives. On May 7, Middlebury College professors Michael Katz (Russian emeritus) and Chris Keathley (Film & Media Culture) will present Reimagining Stories: Translation & Adaptation. Using three short clips of American, Russian, and English adaptations of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, Katz and Keathley will talk about how language and culture influence our perception of stories, be it in art or life. These events are not just lectures! They are an opportunity to learn, yes, but more importantly, they are meant to foster connection amongst curious people of varying backgrounds. Everyone is welcome, but participation is limited, so you must register!
