May Day originates from the Haymarket affair of 1886, when workers striking in favor of the eight-hour work week were brutally targeted. Since then, workers around the world have gathered together annually on May 1st to commemorate the struggles and sacrifices made over the decades to build worker power and solidarity. This May Day, we will celebrate the gains made by workers over the last year with speeches from labor leaders, listen to live music performed by local bands including Sun Room, and enjoy free food provided by People's Kitchen.
