As EMS providers, we are approached daily by community members who tell us they do not know how we care for our patients, and say they could never do our job!
However, our message is to our community, who, by giving blood, can propel you to the level of SUPERHERO and, indeed, be the reason someone's life is saved, and becoming a member of the healthcare TEAM!
Only 3% of the adult population currently gives blood routinely.
Every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood or platelets.
According to the American Cancer Society, more than 1.9 million people are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in 2023. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during chemotherapy treatment.
A SINGLE car crash victim can require as many as 100 units of blood during the duration of treatment.
Also, science tells us that giving blood is actually physically and emotionally beneficial. Your body replaces the blood volume within 48 hours of donation, and all of the red blood cells are completely replaced within four to eight weeks. This keeps your body working efficiently, and benefits your heart.
