VNRC will host a reception tonight (Friday, April 5th) for artist Susan Bull Riley as part of Montpelier Art Walk. Susan's recently refreshed exhibit, "Plant Portraiture in Watercolor", is a collection of paintings that faithfully depict some of Vermont's most spectacular flora. A native Vermonter and current resident of East Montpelier, Susan will be on-site for part of the evening to discuss the methods and inspiration behind her work.
Susan was attracted to the world of botanical watercolors by the meditative process of setting a plant in front of her and painting it as faithfully as possible. As she writes, "it's a slow art form that marries precise drawing, beautiful composition, and a willingness to stay seated for what can be an unreasonably long time, racing to capture the leaf or bloom before wilt sets in." More of Susan's work can be seen at Katie's Jewels on East State Street, in galleries around the state, and also online at her website, https://www.susanbullriley.com/.
Doors will be open to the public from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. Light refreshments, including homemade baked goods, will be served while supplies last. Additional visiting hours for Susan's exhibit can be found on VNRC's website, www.vnrc.org, or by appointment.
Although we are booked through October 2024, VNRC continues to seek out Vermont-based artists whose work connects with or complements our mission to protect and enhance our natural environments and wildlife, vibrant communities, productive working landscapes, rural character and unique sense of place.
