Poet, Educator – and a Reformer
Sarah Cleghorn 1876-1959
Join us to hear the story of a remarkable Manchester woman who used her fierce intellect and considerable literary talents not only to contribute to the community she loved, but to advocate for important social reforms to a wider audience. Her friend the poet Robert Frost said of her: "To a saint and a reformer like Sarah Cleghorn the great importance is not to get hold of both ends, but of the right end." She published poems, essays, and novels and is the only Manchester resident to appear in Bartlett's Familiar Quotations. We invite you to learn more about this writer who devoted her life to education and addressing the social ills of her time.
This presentation will be given by Manchester Historical Society's curator, Shawn Harrington, and president, Frederica Templeton.
