Poultney Fire Department, a 125-year old department of Poultney citizen volunteers, has been selected to receive the 2014 Poultney Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award.

The public is cordially invited to join the Chamber in honoring Poultney Fire Department’s present and past member volunteers at a public reception to be held on Saturday, November 1st from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the firehouse of Poultney Fire Department, 263 Beaman Street, Poultney, Vermont. Light hors d’Oeurves and celebration cake will be served. The reception will be co-hosted with the Chamber by the Town of Poultney. All are welcome.

Each year for the past 125 years, the volunteer members of Poultney Fire Department can be counted on to respond to a number of incidents that require a quick and safe response to protect life and property. Last year alone, the Department responded to 164 service calls ranging from structure fires to motor vehicle accidents to mutual aid calls. The recently retired Fire Chief, Tim Kerber, served as the Co-Director for Emergency Management for the Town as will the current Acting Fire Chief Medrick Petty, III; and 2nd Ass’t Chief Aaron Kerber is ready to assist. Under retired Chief Kerber’s command in 2014, the Department immediately responded to the devastation in the Poultney community caused by the extreme storm on July 3rd.

The Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award, presented annually since 1990 by the Poultney Chamber, honors resident citizens having made major contributions to the betterment of Poultney; who has distinguished herself or himself through outstanding service to the community and typifies the true spirit of service and self-sacrifice in representing the finest ideals of Poultney citizenship - - a real "unsung hero" of Poultney. The Citizen of the Year will be the Grand Marshal of the 2015 July 4th parade in Poultney.

Twenty-four years of citizen awards have been presented to thirty-two Poultney citizens.

Poultney Chamber looks forward to the community joining with them on Saturday, November 1st for this 25th annual celebration; this year honoring Poultney Fire Department, 125 years of many Poultney citizen volunteers caring for the Poultney community.
