Civics Community Conversations- Everyone's Invited

Past event
Apr 16, 2024, 6 to 8 PM

Twinfield Union School, in Marshfield,Vermont held a community conversation Thursday evening to discuss Civics. One parent commented, "Civics can be about compromise- finding a way to bridge a gap so both sides can learn." The common thread among the 35 participants, who ranged from 13 to 75 years, was that Democracy is a verb and a practice. With the shared sentiment that by being Civically engaged is how we are going to save our democracy.

The discussion was facilitated by high school students engaged in learning with Chris Sheehan. A high school civics and history teacher at Twinfield Union School who is currently conducting research and developing a curriculum to engage students, staff and community in the very important work of understanding civics. One of six recipients of The Roland Fellowship in 2023, Chris is "getting the time to read and discuss all of the important issues that he has been yearning to, but didn't have the time." We ended the evening by sharing, "How we want to see students showing up in the community?" Opinions included participation in Town Meeting Day, in community committees, respectfully and with social skills, achieving a "civic seal", internships in the community, involving more students in the legislature, with professionalism and enthusiasm and by creating a model student government within the school.

As a member of the Twinfield Union School Board, and parent of three in the school, I am committed to these evenings continuing. Together, we can create a safe and supportive environment for all to learn, question, and come together to continue this discussion of civics. Respectfully, Erin Barry.

All are invited to the next conversation, Tuesday, April 16th, 2024.
