Spend an Evening with an Amphibian Expert!

Past event
Mar 22, 2024, 7 to 8:30 PM

Join the Shrewsbury Conservation Commission on March 22 at the Shrewsbury Library at 7:00 pm for an interesting presentation on Amphibians! Luke Groff, with Vermont Fish and Wildlife, will talk about the ecology, status, and threats of Vermont's 21 native amphibian species. He will also share pictures and talk about the importance of "big nights", which are amphibian mass migration events that occur every spring across northeastern US. Luke will provide tips on how to find amphibian road crossings and what to do when you find one. Originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Luke now lives in Danby with his wife and two young kids. He works out of Vermont Fish and Wildlife's Rutland office and is responsible for reptile and amphibian conservation statewide, as well as state lands management in Rutland and Bennington Counties

Not only can you learn about amphibians with Luke Groff, but you can participate in a nighttime adventure. On rainy spring evenings, amphibians migrate back to their birth area, often navigating across dangerous roads to do so. You can help carry them across the roads and record data on the various species found.

We never know just when the conditions will be perfect for this nighttime migration, so email Connie Youngstrom at cjyoungstrom55@gmail.com and add you name to the list of people wanting to be notified when this will occur! Connie will email all who sign up to join in the adventure that night. All ages welcome!
