Carving a Niche for Himself: The Untold Story of Luigi Del Bianco and Mount Rushmore

Not many know the name Luigi Del Bianco, but his grandson Lou and coauthor Douglas J. Gladstone are out to change that. Luigi grew up in Meduno, Italy, and worked in the Barre granite quarries from 1908-1915 but left to fight for Italy in World War I. He returned to America after the war and eventually became chief carver on Mount Rushmore. He is not often credited as such, however, possibly due to his Italian heritage. Gladstone and Del Bianco explore Luigi's life and work while critically examining the role of Italians in American history and working to give credit to the Italian-Americans who shaped our nation - and our national icons.
