Free Solar Eclipse Event

Past event
Apr 8, 2024, 2 to 4:30 PM

Mon, Apr 8, anytime from 2 to 4:30 pm, at Hoisington Field & the 1879 Schoolhouse, Rte 106 in Perkinsville.

In a joint effort, Reading Public Library, Weathersfield Proctor Library, and the Southern Vermont Astronomy Group were awarded a nearly $5,000 grant for the purchase of a solar telescope that provides an image of the textured surface of the sun, the coronal flares around its perimeter, and other details not discernible with less expensive solar viewers. Weather permitting, this telescope will be set up for observation of the eclipse. We will watch as the moon moves toward and across the sun, briefly covering most of it. The near total eclipse will occur at 3:26 pm and will last about 3 minutes. Bring your solar viewing glasses. A limited number will be available at the event. They are also available at the Reading Public Library while supplies last. Phone number is 802-484-5588. Email is reading.public.library@comcast.net

If skies do not cooperate on eclipse day, we will instead meet at 2:30 pm at the 1879 Schoolhouse adjacent to Hoisington Field for a presentation.
