What is a mala bead necklace?

A mala bead necklace is a string of beads traditionally used in prayer and meditation practices in Hinduism, Buddhism, and other spiritual traditions. The term "mala" is Sanskrit for "garland."

A mala consists of 108 beads. The number 108 is significant in many spiritual practices and symbolizes various aspects of the universe, including the 108 names for deities, the 108 Upanishads (ancient philosophical texts), and the 108 nadis (energy channels) in the body according to some yoga and Ayurvedic traditions.

Mala beads can be made from a variety of materials, including wood, seeds and gemstones. Each bead is separated by a knot, which symbolizes the interconnectedness of all things. At the end of the mala is a tassel or pendant.

Mala beads are used in meditation by repeating a mantra, prayer, or affirmation with each bead. Practitioners move from one bead to the next as they recite their chosen mantra, helping to maintain focus and concentration.

Beyond their use in meditation, mala beads are also worn as jewelry or carried as a reminder of one's spiritual practice and intentions. Each bead can carry personal significance, and the mala as a whole serves as a tangible symbol of mindfulness, spirituality, and inner peace.
