History of Eugenics in the Green Mountain State: Vermont for the Vermonters
Thursday March 07 | 6:00PM - 7:00PM
Steele Room, Municipal Building 28 North Main Street, Waterbury

A collaboration of The Waterbury Public Library, Waterbury Historical Society, and Bridgeside Books, author and historian Mercedes de Guardiola is joined by Vermont State Reference Archivist Mariessa Dobrick and Vermont State Representative Tom Stevens. Each has unique context, history, and modern updates to add to the conversation.

Published by the Vermont Historical Society, de Guardiola's book, Vermont for the Vermonters, examines how the state's eugenics movement emerged out of the public policies of the nineteenth century and led to state-sanctioned programs of institutionalization, sterilization, family separation, and education aimed at the most vulnerable Vermonters. Exploring the social and political legacy of the movement, de Guardiola brings new scholarship and context to one of Vermont's darkest chapters.

Event is free to the public. Books will be available for purchase at the event or reserve your copy ahead of time at https://www.bridgesidebooks.com/item/UcfxNH6T_ET_h30o7ixuHA.
