On Monday night, a forum will be held in the Hayes Meeting Room of Kellogg Hubbard Library to discuss both sides of including $1,5 million in the upcoming year's school budget for the elementary school in Roxbury after the state's property tax subsidy has ended.
Montpelier Roxbury School Board Chair Jim Murphy will state the case for including the funds in the budget and having a study group pursue the issue to make another decision on the school's fate before next year's budget is drafted.
Montpelier resident Richard Sheir will state the case for voting No on the current budget which includes $1.5 million to keep the small school open. He will argue that the $1,5 million be set aside to act as a cushion against anticipated budget cuts required to balance the following year's budget.
There will be an explanation of Act 127 which changed the school student weighting and how it frames the district's tax rate and the budget being presented. The terms of Act 46, the school merger act that created the Montpelier-Roxbury district will also be explained.
There will be ample time allotted for questions to be addressed.
