Bread and Puppet Museum Opening

Past event
Jun 2, 2024, 2 to 5 PM

Bread & Puppet will host our traditional Museum Open House Sunday, June 2nd at 2 p.m. As always, this celebratory afternoon of performances, bread, and museum appreciation will mark the beginning of a bustling summer season at the Bread & Puppet farm.

The Open House will begin at the entrance of our Museum, where local singers will gather to sing songs in the "Shape Note" tradition, an early American sacred singing tradition with deep roots in Vermont, in four-part harmony. Next, the Museum will receive its ceremonial opening for the season: the museum guard will be woken up and reinstalled at his post for the summer. The public will be invited to peruse the museum.

In keeping with tradition, the middle of the afternoon will feature performances by B&P friends and guests with original music and short puppet shows at locations around the B&P farm.

The afternoon will conclude with a brand-new Bread & Puppet show!

The show, says Schumann, is "in response to our totally unresurrected capitalist situation...our culture's unwillingness to recognize Mother Earth's revolt against our civilization. Since we earthlings do not live up to our earthling obligations, we need resurrection circuses to yell against our own stupidity."

After the show Bread & Puppet will serve its famous sourdough rye bread with aioli, and Bread & Puppet's "Cheap Art" – books, posters, postcards, pamphlets and banners from the Bread & Puppet Press – will be for sale.

In order to present our shows without seeking government or corporate funding, we have always relied on the generous support of our audiences and community.

Tickets for the Summer 2024 shows are $10 each. Admission by donation for kids 6 and under. Tickets are non-refundable. We ask that you purchase a ticket ahead of time if you're able.

However, it's central to our philosophy for our shows to be accessible and no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Dogs are discouraged, though well behaved dogs on leash are allowed. If you bring your dog, PLEASE SIT IN THE BACK of the audience, AT THE TOP OF THE THEATER as far away as possible from the brass band and bring plenty of water (there is none onsite).

We look forward to seeing you this summer!
