Artist in Residence Gallery Reception

The Artist In Residence Gallery on Main Street in Enosburg Falls will feature mixed media artist Maureen Genzlinger, woodworker Barry Genzlinger, painter Martha Ohlinger, and box maker Carl Newton at their monthly reception on Sunday, October 5th from 1-3 p.m.

The Genzlingers, a husband and wife team from Milton, have been selling their crafts together for more than 15 years. However, they rarely work together. Maureen makes delicate decorative ornaments, selecting from hundreds of colorful balls, spools of string and floss and thousands of beads, on the second floor of their home. Barry works in the basement, two floors below, making wooden tops, earrings, pendants and small bowls from hundreds of scrap pieces of wood he collects from other woodworkers or salvages from dumpsters.

Newton, a retired Professor of Forestry at UVM, who eventually became Assoc Dean of the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, is also a bentwood box maker. The Jericho woodworker works largely in the Shaker tradition although he also makes some Norwegian style bentwood boxes. Newton's reproduction boxes resemble boxes that date back to the late 18th century. As far as raw materials, traditionally in the Northeast, sugar maple sides with white pine tops and bottoms were the choice materials used, but Newton likes to also use cherry and walnut and on occasion birds eye maple in his projects.

Oil painter Ohlinger specializes in still life. The Fairfield artist gets her inspiration from ordinary everyday items which she then turns into works of art.

The seven-year-old AIR gallery – located at 321 Main Street, Enosburg - is a member owned and operated cooperative. It is open Wednesday through Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 10-2.
