Past event
Feb 17, 2024, 10 AM to 12 PM

Please join us on Saturday, February 17 for the Walloomsac River and Downtown Walk when we will highlight two individuals as unsung heroes in our community. The walk will also focus on upcoming elections and provide an opportunity for the community to talk with School and Select Board candidates who are seeking office on March 5.

The walk will include a presentation of the eighth Unsung Hero Award, which recognizes individuals who have quietly gone above and beyond on behalf of the community. Cindy and Marsh Hudson-Knapp will receive this month's award. They have made significant contributions to the Bennington community over the years including service through the Bennington Rotary and Interfaith Council; enthusiastic participation in waste diversion efforts at Garlic Town; leadership on energy issues through the Southshire Window Dressers program; organizing and volunteering at the Sunday Supper program; and numerous efforts to advance equity issues in the community.

This Saturday's Walloomsac Downtown River Walk will be attended by eleven of the candidates running for office in the March 5 election. Each of the candidates has expressed their interest in meeting and speaking with Bennington residents in an informal setting. The following Select Board candidates are expected to attend: Clark Adams, Jim Carroll, Nancy White. Chad Gordon sends his regrets as he will be out of town. The following SVSU and SW Tech Center Board candidates are expected to attend: Frank Barnes, Asher Edelson, Chris Murphy, Kristen Olmstead, Joe Orzehowski, Glenn Thurber, Susan Plaisance, Anthony TJ Williams.

February's walk will begin at 10 AM at the Rotary/Bennington Station Park on Depot Street between Main Street and River Street. The walk will follow the Walloomsac Riverwalk to School Street and then loop around to conclude at the VFW Post 1332 at 137 North Street for more conversation with the candidates. Refreshments will be provided by Moon Scones of North Bennington.

Walloomsac River Walks take place on the third Saturday of each month. The walks are pet-friendly, and people of all ages are invited to come out and enjoy this ongoing community event. In the case of inclement weather, cancellation notices will be placed on the Front Porch Forum and the Bennington Blotter.
