Attention all lake, ecology, and fish lovers! The Patrick Leahy Lake Champlain Basin Program (LCBP) is hosting their Winter Love the Lake speaker series--4 FREE public presentations on Lake Champlain's cultural and natural history. Join us at the LCBP office in Grand Isle to enjoy homemade desserts while you learn about our beloved lake (or join online; Zoom link below).
The series kicks off next Thursday (2/22) at 6:30 PM with a presentation on invasive species by Dr. Ellen Marsden, UVM Professor of Wildlife & Fisheries Biology.
Her talk, "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly – A Perspective on Invasive Species," will address the question: when "bad" and "invasive" seem to go hand in hand, is there such a thing as a "good" invasive species? She will discuss changing perceptions of both native and invasive aquatic species, and how the history of farm crop insect pests has helped with managing aquatic pests. The discussion will range from invasive lake trout to native pests and emphasize why prevention of new invasives such as round goby is a critical goal for Lake Champlain.
