Arlington Historical Society Meeting

Past event
Jan 28, 2024, 2 to 4 PM

The next meeting of the Arlington, Sandgate, and Sunderland Historical Society will be held on Sunday, January 28th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Sandgate Meeting Room at the Martha Canfield Library. Topics will include updates on preparations for the Commemoration of the Capture of Fort Ticonderoga, the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, and identifying historic marker sites in preparation for the commemoration of the founding of Vermont.

Planning for Commemoration activities has already started with activities to mark the patriots' Capture of Fort Ticonderoga and Crown Point. On May 2, 3, and 4, 2025 a series of programs will be held in Bennington/Pownal on Friday, May 2nd, in Arlington, Sunderland, and Sandgate on May 3rd, and Manchester and Dorset on Sunday, May 4th. Related activities could range from improvements at the State Seal Pine site to preparing local town maps identifying Revolutionary War-era sites.

An official Vermont Historic marker has been approved for placement in East Arlington at the corner of Ice Pond and Old Mill Roads to mark the capture of Remember Baker by a 'Yorker' posse on March 22, 1772. Our challenge is to recognize other sites in Arlington, Sandgate, and Sunderland that have contributes to our state and national history. Discussion and suggestions are welcome.

The library is located at 528 East Arlington Road, Arlington, next to the Fisher Elementary School. The meeting room is handicap accessible and is the right-hand side of the building.
