The first Architecture and Design Film for 2024, ALICE STREET, will be screened for free at Contois Auditorium, Burlington VT on Wednesday, January 17. Doors open at 6:00 , Screening at 6:30. ONLINE screening same day only at ADFILMSERIES.ORG
A vibrant and engaging film about community murals in Oakland's downtown, ground zero for gentrification, ALICE STREET follows two artists in partnership with a diverse community as they paint their most ambitious mural to date. Their site is situated at a unique intersection where Chinese and Afro-Diasporic communities face the imminent threat of displacement and gentrification. Fraught with challenges, the mural is finally completed to great fanfare and a vibrant celebration. Soon after the mural paint dries, a luxury condo is planned that will obstruct the art and cultural history. The community decides to fight back. This film explores public arts and its potential to give voice to a community.
WILL KASSO CONDRY Renowned Visual Artist and Co-Founder of Juniper Creative Arts will give opening remarks and facilitate a post-screening Q & A with Desi Mundo, co-designer and artist of the Alice Street mural.
Come to the screening, spread the word or watch online (though you will miss the discussion.) A marvelously energizing way to step into the new year.
