Brattleboro Women's Chorus Offers Virtual Workshop
Singing in the Spirit: The African American Sacred Music Tradition

The Brattleboro Women's Chorus will be singing music from the African diaspora this spring. To kick off their spring session, they welcome Dr. Kathy Bullock to lead a virtual workshop on Zoom on Thursday, January 18 at 7 pm and invite any singers in to join them. The workshop is called Singing in the Spirit: The African American Sacred Music Tradition.

Spirituals and gospel music are much more than pleasing songs to listen to—they are powerful representations of the triumphant spirit and faith that have defined African-American music and people. Bullock takes the audi-ence on a musical journey from West Africa, through the middle passage, to the North American shores where the African-American culture was forged. Through songs, stories, and performance, this participatory program lets the audience experience the beauty, joy, and power of this music and culture.

Dr. Kathy Bullock is an educator, scholar, singer, accompanist, arranger and choral conductor who specializes in gospel music, spirituals and classical works by composers from the African diaspora. A Professor Emerita of Music from Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, she is currently teaching, performing, and conducting workshops and other programs on African American music throughout the United States, Europe, and Africa.

This workshop is open to the public to any singer, near or far. The cost is on a sliding scale of $15-$25 per person. Advance registration is required online to receive the Zoom link: https://brattleborowomenschorus.org/workshops/. Those registered will receive a recording as well.

If you are interested in joining the Brattleboro Women's Chorus' spring semester, we begin with an extended rehearsal on January 20, with weekly rehearsals starting on February 29. Registration and information can be found at: https://brattleborowomenschorus.org/join-us/
