The GFL Book Club's January selection will be Girls Burn Brighter, by Shobha Rao, about two girls in India who are poor but ambitious. Copies are now available for loan here. The book club will meet on Thursday, January 25th at 1:00 in person at the library and also at 7:00 over Zoom (for those who can't make it in person).
I've chosen a book set in India to prepare those of us who might want to join Mimi Benedict's livestream of the Camden Conference here from February 16-18. The conference will focus on India, which 75 years after independence is on track to have the world's largest population and second largest economy. Attendance here will be free and more information is at: https://www.camdenconference.org/. I've also ordered ILL copies of an optional second book, Beyond the Beautiful Forevers, by Katherine Boo, a journalist's account of life in a Mumbai undercity, and we have a display here with several more novels and informational books about India's history, politics, and food. If you can't make it to the conference, I still recommend this novel -- I've started it and so far love the writing and the two main characters.
Happy reading and see you soon at the Library!
