On January 23 at CVU at 6:00, Jane Vossler, storyteller and teacher, will retell the harrowing tale of Jan Baalsrude and how he survived both the Nazis and the Arctic winter during WWII. This presentation is based on the book We Die Alone by David Howarth who interviewed Jan Baalsrude after the war.
Jon's a 26 year old Norwegian resistance fighter who has returned home by fishing boat from exile in England with a small group of companions. Before they even land on Norwegian soil, all except Jan are killed.
Then he's on his own. At one point, Baalsrude finds himself in a shallow grave sized hole on the top of a plateau during a blizzard. Days and nights pass as he waits for some strangers to show up and rescue him. Learn how a mixture of strength and perseverance, of luck time after time, and of the courage and kindness of strangers enabled Baalsrude to survive.
