The Canfield Gallery located at the Martha Canfield Library in Arlington, VT will open the year with an exhibit of paintings by the late Dr. Russell F. Housman, a well-known local artist. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, January 13th from 3:00-5:00 pm. The exhibit will be on display until February 24, 2024. Selected works will be for sale, with a portion of the proceeds to support programming at the Martha Canfield Library. The show will be on exhibit through February 24.

Russell, a Korean War Veteran, was born on January 13,1928 in Buffalo, NY. He later studied at Buffalo State College and Albright College. He then resided in Great Neck, Long Island, where he served as Professor Emeritus at SUNY College in Nassau County. Russ was a noted artist of the postmodern era in both in Buffalo NY and New York City and he was member of the Chautauqua Art Institute and the Silvermine Arts Guild. He also wrote poetry, illustrated books, and was especially remembered for sending personal Christmas cards to friends over many decades.

The turbulent influence of the New York art scene during the 1960s and 1970s led Housman to his own version of abstract expressionism. He has shown his work in several shows in New York City, Connecticut, Long Island and Vermont. Since moving to Vermont in the early 1990s, painting and teaching became his creative passions. He also taught in the art program at the Long Trail School in Dorset and held memberships with The Chaffe Art Center in Rutland and The Southern Vermont Arts Center in Manchester.

The Library is located at 528 East Arlington Rd. in Arlington. For more information visit marthacanfieldlibrary.org or call 802-375-6153.
