Bird Count Saturday - Fill Your Feeder Time!

Past event
Dec 30, 12 AM to 12 AM, Dec 31, 2023

Hello Huntington Community- it's Fill your Feeder time!
This Saturday marks the 124th year of Audubon's annual Christmas Bird count. If you have feeders, please be sure they're filled. Birding participants have signed up through the Audubon and are assigned to a 15 mile circle to conduct counts. Slow moving cars, pedestrians with binoculars and a lot of wild gesticulation can be witnessed. It's true, Birders are an excitable lot.

Last years count for our 15 mile radius observed 48 different species which included 278 Bohemian Waxwings, 4 Bald Eagles, and 1 Great Blue Heron.

If you would like to conduct your own count at your feeder, feel free to share your results with the Bird Compiler in your area and let them know ahead of time so there won't be a duplication of counting. If you don't know who that is, reach out to the Audubon, or send me an email, and we'll get the information to the right bird compiler.

If you're new to bird counts: use the highest number of each species you have observed all day. Example: if you count 10 Chickadees at 10AM and 16 at 3PM, your reported count would be 16. The Merlin Bird app by Cornell University provides information should you wonder what species you might be observing.
Feel free to give a shout with any questions- or sightings!
