Scandinavian Music and Dance Weekend!

Summit School of Traditional Music announces its Scandinavian Music Weekend, Fri. Sept. 26 through Sun. Sept. 28 in Montpelier, VT.

Get ready to dust off your nyckelharpas! To satisfy Vermont’s voracious appetite for Swedish folk music, the Summit School brings Anna Lindblad, master fiddler from Stockholm, back to Vermont for a weekend of teaching and performance. Anna kicks off the weekend with a concert Friday night at 7:30 pm at the North Branch Café on State St.., Montpelier, VT. Admission is $10 and seating is limited. Tickets are available online (www.summit-school.org) or at the door.

On Saturday, Anna leads two traditional Swedish music workshops, one for intermediate-advanced level fiddlers, and the other, a Scandinavian tune workshop for all instruments, at Vermont Violins’ Montpelier shop, each $30. Anna started playing fiddle as a child and quickly absorbed the vast folk music knowledge surrounding her in Gothenburg. She polished her fiddle skills at specialized schools and earned a degree from the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. She is highly-regarded as a teacher and currently performs internationally in several bands.

At the Montpelier Grange Hall later Saturday, Lisa Brooks of Washington, DC, returns to teach Swedish folk dance on at 4 pm, followed by a potluck supper at 6 pm. An evening of Scandi music and dance with Anna Lindblad, David Kaynor, Aaron Marcus, and friends runs from 7-10pm and begins with brief instruction on the Schottis and Hambo, popular Swedish dances. Leather soles or socks preferred for dancing.

The weekend will culminate in a Scandinavian music jam open to all on Sunday from noon to 2 pm in downtown Montpelier (email hendrixfiddle@gmail.com for more info and address). The Scandinavian Music and Dance Weekend is generously sponsored by Vermont Violins and the Montpelier Grange Hall.

Each event is priced separately, or you may purchase a ‘Scandi-Binge’ all-weekend, all-event pass for $84 ($94 value). To register for workshops, to purchase tickets, and for all details and locations for each event, check the Events page at www.summit-school.org , email Director@summit-school.org , or call 802-917-1186.
