Preview of Dec. 11 City Council Meeting

Past event
Dec 11, 2023, 5 to 11 PM

Dear Ward 6 neighbors,

I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful weekend.

Following an expected executive session on City Place, the Post Apartments and Cambrian Rise, our deliberative agenda includes four items:

• SUPPORT OF THE THREE YOUNG MEN OF PALESTINIAN DESCENT VICTIMIZED BY A SENSELESS ACT OF HATE AND HONORING THE BURLINGTONIANS WHO HELPED THEM - AND CALLING FOR A PERMANENT CEASEFIRE BETWEEN ISRAEL AND PALESTINE. This resolution first speaks to the community's support for the victims of the recent and horrific shooting and states our community's value that hate has no harbor in our city. The resolution then moves to international foreign policy, calling for the City Council to voice its support for a ceasefire. I will not be supporting this resolution.

• PROPOSED CHARTER CHANGE ON POLICING We will be discussing some changes to policing in our City Charter that, if approved, would go to two public hearings and then the Councill could make changes before being placed on the ballot in March. They expand the role of the Police Commission and some changes in oversight protocols.

• PROPOSED CHARTER CHANGE REGARDING BURLINGTON ELECTRIC BONDING AUTHORITY Department is seeking approval and authorization to change its borrowing authority to $10 million from $5 million to accommodate changing needs.

• IMPLEMENTATION OF A CARBON POLLUTION IMPACT FEE FOR NEW CONSTRUCTION AND LARGE EXISTING COMMERCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS 25,000 SQUARE FEET OR LARGER On the heels of the passage of a Charter change regarding carbon pollution impact fees on other structures, this change would effect new construction and large existing buildings as specified.
