From colonial New England, through New York and Philadelphia's urban Yuletide contributions, to the Christmas traditions in the pre-Civil War South, Stephen Nissenbaum's excursion is fascinating and will startle even those who thought they knew all there was to know about Christmas. Steve taught U.S. history at UMass/Amherst before retiring to Underhill 20 years ago. He has written books on the Salem witchcraft, sexual and dietary reform, and The Battle for Christmas: a Social and Cultural History of Christmas. His talk will take place at the Deborah Rawson Library on Sunday, December 17th at 1:30 pm. The talk is sponsored by the Underhill Historical Society.
