Social Band, in a first-ever collaboration with the Champlain Consort, will present a program featuring music and carols of the Spanish Renaissance inspired by the wintry season. Selections both choral and instrumental will encompass the solemn and celebratory characteristics of this time of year. Join us for a selection of delightful and enlivening songs and tunes of the season!
This December, Social Band is putting the "band" back in "Social Band" through collaboration with the Champlain Consort - a group of six early music musicians, led by Chapin Kaynor. The Champlain Consort performs Medieval, Renaissance, and Elizabethan music on period instruments. The members of the Consort perform on recorders, sackbuts (Renaissance trombones), viola da gamba, cornetto, capped reeds, and percussion, combining different types of instruments in "broken consort" tradition to recreate the distinctive sound of English and European Medieval and Renaissance music.
Unfamiliar with Social Band? This 25-member choral group based in Chittenden County weaves together poetry and song to create sometimes thoughtful, sometimes joyful, sometimes irreverent choral music programs. The group strives to draw upon the strengths of classical and folk traditions, and offers a performance that is both refined and a direct expression of feeling – feeding listeners' hearts and heads. Encouraging composition has been part of Social Band's mission from the outset, and much of its repertoire comes from Vermont composers - many of them members of the group. Social Band is directed by Amity Baker.
